The Importance of Forgiveness

When we hold on to pain, we are constantly emotionally and cognitively involved in the same story that goes on and on. It is hard to concentrate on anything other than our pain. Forgiveness releases the goodness within ourselves and extends mercy to those who have hurt us. Forgiveness is important because it brings us peace of mind that allows us to focus on ourselves and helps us move on with life. Working on forgiveness can help us increase our self-esteem and give us a sense of inner strength, security and self-worth. Forgiveness matters because it can heal us and allow us to move on in life with meaning and purpose.

Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a commitment to change and takes practice. Forgiveness is a choice. It is not easy, but it helps us get rid of the pain. To be able to forgive, it is important to work on a positive change in our inner world. Practising forgiveness means making a conscious effort not to speak critically of those who have hurt us. In doing so, we nurture the more forgiving side of our mind and heart. It is important to begin to cultivate the mindset of valuing and understanding our common humanity, so that it becomes harder to label those who have harmed us as unworthy. Recognising that we all carry wounds of some kind in our hearts helps us open the door to forgiveness.

What if We Can’t Forgive

Forgiveness can be very difficult especially if we cannot open our hearts to those who have hurt us. If we want to forgive, but find it difficult, we can use our suffering to become more loving and pass that love onto others. Forgiveness is a process that requires time, patience and determination that we must work on. Realising that we are all capable of imperfection and suffering, we can develop the courage and patience that will help us on our path to forgiveness. We can try to understand those who have hurt us by thinking about times when we have hurt others and they have forgiven us. Even if we are less forgiving than others, we can learn to be more forgiving.
