What Are Expectations
Expectations are strong beliefs or hopes that something will happen, that we will get something we want, that someone will behave the way we think they should and the like. They refer to the beliefs we have about the outcomes of events. Expectations determine our reality. They play an important role in determining what will happen and can lead to the achievement of the goals. But they can also lead to disappointment if reality does not match what we hoped would happen.
Being Aware of Our Expectations
Our expectations for a certain situation or relationship can be unrealistic. Awareness of our expectations allows us to evaluate them, find out where they come from and how realistic they are. By becoming aware of what we should expect, we learn how to manage expectations. If our expectations are not being met, it is important to take a step back and assess the situation. We need to understand why this happened and what we can do differently in the future. They are just our beliefs, they are not always reality.
Don’t Make Comparisons
Seeing other people’s posts on social media can often make us want the same for ourselves. It is okay to have desires, but we should not base them on other people’s achievements, especially if what we see is not necessarily true. We need to consider what really makes us happy and adjust our expectations accordingly.

Practice Gratitude
When our expectations are not fulfilled as we imagined them, we easily become ungrateful. Instead of being frustrated or angry, we can look for the positives in what we have. Once we get over the disappointment, we can discover many things to be grateful for. Developing an attitude of gratitude towards the people, things, and events in our lives is an effective way to strengthen our emotional resilience and reduce stress by focusing on the positive aspects of our lives. Practicing gratitude can help us process traumatic events and improve our physical health.
