Did You Know That… Practising Blessings

Practising blessings is an intentional habit of shifting your focus from negativity to the inherent goodness in people, events, and yourself. It transforms ordinary moments into experiences of grace and connection.

Core Approaches to Blessings

  • A conscious choice to wish the best for every person or being you encounter.
  • Silently offering well-wishes like “May you be happy” to strangers in everyday settings like supermarkets or traffic.
  • Acknowledging the inherent dignity and value of others without judgment.

Daily Practices

  • Awakening: Start your day by blessing the day ahead for the unseen good it holds.
  • Counting Blessings: End your day by listing “Three Good Things” and savouring why they happened.
  • Blessing Objects: Express gratitude for simple items that serve you, like clean water or a hot shower.
  • Blessing Challenges: Intentionally bless difficult situations or people you dislike, to release personal anger and tension.

Benefits of the Practice

  • Neurological Shift: Regular practice strengthens neural pathways for dopamine and serotonin, making gratitude an automatic response.
  • Relational Antidote: Acts as a “relational poison” antidote against gossip or judgment.
  • Inner Peace: It is impossible to judge and bless at the same time, leading to a calmer mind.

Be a blessing to someone today: SHARE A SMILE, PRAY FOR SOMEONE, OFFER A HAND, BE KIND. Be nice to someone whom you would normally ignore or fight. Wish well to someone who would otherwise make you angry. Share a laugh with someone you don’t usually agree with. Share your meal with someone. Spend time with someone listening to their story. Help someone with a shopping trolley. Offer your help whenever you can. And feel happy!

How to practice blessings

You can bless people quietly, or you can simply say “Bless you” or “God bless you”; You can pray for them to have a good day, a good job or a good life. You can pray for them to become good, to be healed or to be happy. And don’t forget to bless yourself.

If you bless the food you eat, you also bless the people who produced that food, as well as the animals and plants that died so we could live.

When you start practising blessings, you will change: You will be more connected to others, and you will see more ways to encourage positive changes in others.

Ask God to bless you, your family, your home, your friends, and your work because blessings give us hope, encouragement, gratitude and strength.

Along the way, you will notice that all the blessings you have sent out come back to you multiplied.

Do something nice today!!!

Think about what would really make you happy. Think about what would make you feel special, what you would like to happen to you and how you would like to be treated. Feel it in your body. Let that feeling create a thought about how to be really nice today and do something good for someone. Let that feeling bring a smile to your face, warmth in your heart, and shine your light on those who still live in the darkness.
