Did You Know…. Affirmations For A New Year

Affirmations are short, positive statements that are repeated regularly to challenge negative thoughts, improve self-esteem, and promote a more optimistic mindset. The practice is based on the idea that positive thinking can help “rewire” the brain’s neural pathways through neuroplasticity. There is no better way than to start a new year with affirmations to improve your life. Consistency and belief are key to making affirmations work.

How to make your own affirmations

  • Be Authentic: Choose phrases that resonate with your personal values and feel believable, even if you don’t fully feel the truth of them yet.
  • Keep it Brief: Short, simple sentences (around 3-7 words) are easier to remember and repeat.
  • Use the Present Tense: Frame statements as if they are already true (e.g., “I am confident” instead of “I will be confident”).
  • Practice Regularly: Repeat affirmations daily, such as in the morning to start your day positively or in the evening before bed.
  • Incorporate into Routines: Say affirmations aloud (especially in the mirror), write them in a journal, or set digital reminders.
  • Pair with Action: Affirmations are most effective when combined with real-world actions and goal-setting to support behavioural change.

Please note that even though affirmations can be a powerful, accessible tool to support mental health and personal development, they are not a substitute for professional mental health treatment if you need it.
