A sedentary lifestyle is a lifestyle type in which a person is physically inactive and does little or no exercise or physical activity. Spending six or more hours per day sitting or lying down, without physical movement, poses a significant health risk. It is believed that less movement and more sitting is the cause of obesity and the development of serious diseases. Health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle include:

  • Heart disease
  • Increased risk of developing diabetes
  • Developing insulin resistance
  • Loss of muscle and bone strength
  • Reduced circulation
  • Unclear thinking
  • Cancer
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Decreased cognitive function

How to Reverse a Sedentary Lifestyle

Studies have shown that a sedentary lifestyle leads to poor health outcomes. Even small changes in daily activities and habits can have a big impact and improve overall health. Here are some suggestions on how to reverse a sedentary lifestyle:

  • Walk – Find ways to incorporate walking in your daily routine, such as walking to the shops, taking stairs instead of the elevator, walking to work, walking with a friend or family.
  • Use the stairs – Whenever you can, use the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Stand instead of sitting – Stand in public transport or at the station.
  • Stand up at work – Do your work standing up if possible, or stand up every 20 minutes.
  • Exercise – Exercising for 30 minutes a day can reduce the risk of sitting 6 hours or more during the day.
  • Do gardening – Gardening has many health benefits, such as mental and spiritual stimulation, mood improvement, stress reduction, relaxation, etc.
  • Ride a bicycle – Riding a bicycle improves your overall health.
  • Go swimming – Swimming is a very beneficial activity for overall health.
  • Do housework – Doing housework can decrease sitting time.
  • Take part in sports – Participating in sports can be an interesting activity with friends and family.

Living in cities creates an exceptional amount of stress in everyday life; thus, it is very important for everyone, especially mentally ill people, to get out into nature because it relieves at least a little of the stress.
