Meditation

Meditation is a practice in which a person uses a particular technique such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity, to train attention and awareness, in order to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm, and stable state. Meditation is practiced in many religious traditions. The main purpose of meditation is to achieve a sense of calm, peace, and balance, that can result in emotional well-being and improved overall health. Meditation is a powerful practice because it causes changes in our consciousness.

The modern way of life is full of stress and commitments and many people identify with their emotions and thoughts, which causes them problems in all areas of life. The more they identify with their emotions and thoughts, the more trapped they feel and the more time they spend engaged with the same thoughts and emotions. Most of the time people live in the past, thinking about things that happened in the past and that cannot be changed, or are afraid of something that might happen in the future and spend all their energy on creating “what if” scenarios, or analyzing things from the past. They live a large part on autopilot, going automatically through life, without being present and not noticing the abundance that surrounds them.

Therefore, meditation is a practice that can help people change their life for the better. There are multiple benefits of meditation such as:

  • A sense of calm, balance and peace
  • Increased focus
  • Increased attention
  • Clear mind
  • Focus on the present moment
  • Increased cognition
  • Enhanced brain functions
  • Increased self-awareness
  • Improved memory
  • Improved productivity
  • Increased multitasking ability
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved motivation

There are various meditation techniques, so it is important to find the right technique to help you most quickly focus your mind. You can teach yourself to meditate effectively and to get started you need to plan your meditation carefully. You can also listen to a pre-recorded guided meditation or use meditation music. Most people like to practice meditation first thing in the morning to set themselves up for a quiet and productive day. Meditation should last at least 10 minutes, during which time you should sit in a comfortable position, clear your mind, simply sit, observe and be calm. Pay attention to your thoughts as they pass through your mind.
