Microgreens are seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs that are usually between 1-3 inches tall, with only the first pair of true leaves harvested and eaten. From seed to harvest is only 1-2 weeks. They are considered baby plants. Different types of microgreens contain different nutrients. They contain vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Research has shown that microgreens contain 40% more phytochemicals than the mature plant.

Microgreens are a true treasure trove of nutrients and as such are a valuable addition to your diet. You can eat microgreens every day as part of a balanced diet. However, it is important to consume them with other fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.

How To Grow Microgreens

Choose the Microgreen Flavour

First, you need to choose the microgreen flavour you want. Different microgreens contain different nutrients and taste differently. Broccoli and kale are crunchy and a little bitter. The arugula is nutty and peppery, while the mustard has an intense and spicy flavour. Radish, sunflower and fennel have a sweet taste. Beetroot and carrot have a slightly earthy taste.

Once you have chosen the microgreen you want, you should follow these steps:

  • Sow – Fill a shallow container with up to 5 centimetres of potting soil or seed starting mix. Use a spray bottle to thoroughly moisten the soil. Sprinkle the seeds liberally on top of the soil and spray more water.
  • Grow – Place the container on a sunny window. Spray with water several times a day.
  • Harvest – Harvest microgreens at a height of 3-7 centimetres using clean scissors, cutting just above the soil. Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Repeat – Continue harvesting regularly, until all seeds are exhausted. Dispose of soil and start a new crop.

Microgreens are cheap, easy, fast and can be grown at home. They have no special light requirements and do not need fertilizer and pesticides. Microgreens are rich in nutrients and great for your health.
