What is Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle is known to be one of the most potent medicinal plants in the world. It is considered to be one of the herbal miracles. It contains a large amount of bioactive nutrients such as polyphenols, antioxidants that neutralize radical oxidative processes in the body that can cause many health problems, such as inflammation, skin ageing and diseases. Stinging nettle contains vitamin A, C, K, and B complex. It has large amounts of minerals such as selenium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, boron and zinc. It is also rich in protein.

Nettle Stew

Serves: 4

Preparation: 20 minutes

Cooking: 2+20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups fresh nettle leaves
  • 2 + 2 cups filtered water
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
  • Ice water bath
  • ½ + ½ tsp Himalayan salt
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried homemade seasoning
  • ½ cup organic almond milk
  • 2 tbs plain flour

Directions:

Step 1

Wash and dry the nettle leaves.

Step 2

Boil 2 cups of filtered water with ½ a teaspoon of Himalayan salt and add nettles. Cook for 2 minutes, then scoop up the nettles with thongs and immediately plunge into an ice water bath to stop the cooking process.

Step 2

Drain the nettle and squeeze between hands to form a ball and remove excess water. Chop the ball into small pieces and place in a medium saucepan. Add the remaining water, ½ a teaspoon of Himalayan salt, black pepper and dried seasoning and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook for 5 minutes, then reduce the heat.

Step 3

Pour the oil into a small saucepan and heat it over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant. Add the flour and stir well to combine. Once the mixture begins to bubble, add the almond milk and keep stirring until it thickens.

Step 4

Add the garlic mixture to the nettles and stir well to combine. Continue cooking for another 5 minutes until it thickens and reaches the desired consistency.

Serving suggestion:

  • Serve with fried eggs and fresh Turkish bread;
  • Serve with boiled eggs and grilled halloumi cheese.

Tips:

  • You can substitute the almond milk with milk of your choice
